Alkylate petrol for 4-stroke engines
Aspen 4 Alkylate Petrol is straight petrol without oil, intended for 4-stroke engines. It is suitable for lawnmowers, rotary cultivators, snow blowers, generators, stump grinders, outboard engines and other 4-stroke petrol machinery. It can also be used in camping stoves and lanterns. Two-stroke outboards can use Aspen 4 when it is mixed with outboard oil.
Aspen 4 can replace ordinary petrol in any brand of machine. Aspen states that machine suppliers should continue to honour warranties when it is used.
Storage and fuel characteristics
Aspen 4 contains no ethanol. Ethanol in regular petrol attracts moisture, which can contribute to starting problems and engine failures. Aspen 4 has a stated storage life of 3–5 years, compared with 3–5 months for regular petrol—about ten times longer. This allows machinery to be stored over winter without emptying the tank, with the fuel intended to remain usable when the machine is started again.
Because it contains no ethanol, Aspen 4 is also suited to marine environments. Its long storage life can be useful for machinery used intermittently, including seasonal garden equipment, generators and boats.
Combustion, emissions and operator exposure
Aspen 4 is described as up to 99% cleaner than regular petrol in terms of hazardous hydrocarbons. It is virtually free from benzene, aromatics, olefins, sulphur and solvents, and is virtually odourless, which helps reduce operator exposure to harmful exhaust. It keeps spark plugs and the combustion chamber cleaner and leaves very little carbon deposit, helping engines last longer.
Aspen 4 reduces the formation of ground-level ozone (smog) by about 40%. Mowing for 100 hours on Aspen gives the same benzene emissions as one hour on regular petrol.
