The STIHL HSA 40 battery-powered hedge trimmer delivers excellent cutting performance in an extremely lightweight and well-balanced package. It is specifically designed for homeowners undertaking smaller hedge maintenance tasks, such as trimming box hedges and controlling annual growth. At just 2.1 kg (without the battery), it ensures effortless and comfortable work, even for extended periods.
Fitted with a 50 cm (20″) double-sided, single-edged cutting blade, the HSA 40 provides a clean and precise cut. The blades are laser-cut and diamond-ground, ensuring they remain sharp, durable, and capable of meeting the highest demands. A screw-on tip protector is included as standard, which prevents blade damage when cutting close to the ground or along walls, enhancing both safety and the tool’s lifespan.
This hedge trimmer is part of STIHL’s versatile AS System. This kit includes two removable AS 2 lithium-ion batteries and an AL 1 charger. Each AS 2 battery provides up to 40 minutes of runtime, giving you ample power for your garden tasks. The batteries are interchangeable with other tools in the AS range, including the GTA 26 garden pruner and SEA 20 hand vacuum. An integrated LED charge-level indicator on the tool allows you to check the remaining battery capacity at the press of a button, helping you plan your work efficiently.
The HSA 40 features a two-handed design, requiring simultaneous pressing of switches on the loop handle and rear handle to operate, which is a key safety feature for both right-handed and left-handed users. For easy and safe storage, the tool has an integrated hanging eyelet, and a tailor-made blade scabbard is included to protect the blades during transport and storage.

The STIHL HSA 40 is designed for homeowners with smaller gardens. It is perfect for tasks like trimming box hedges, shaping ornamental bushes, and cutting back the year’s new growth on smaller hedges. Its lightweight and ergonomic design makes it very easy to handle for these applications.
This kit comes with everything you need to get started: the HSA 40 hedge trimmer body, two STIHL AS 2 lithium-ion batteries, and one AL 1 standard charger. A blade scabbard for safe storage is also included.
With a fully charged AS 2 battery, you can expect a working time of up to 40 minutes. As this kit includes two batteries, you have a total potential runtime of up to 80 minutes, allowing you to have one battery on charge while using the other.
The HSA 40 is part of the STIHL AS System. The included AS 2 battery is interchangeable with other tools in this specific compact range, such as the GTA 26 garden pruner and the SEA 20 hand vacuum. It is not compatible with other STIHL battery systems like AK or AP.
The laser-cut, diamond-ground blades are very durable. To maintain performance, it’s recommended to clean them of resin and debris after each use. Regular sharpening and servicing, which can be carried out by our workshop, will ensure they remain in optimal condition. For storage, always use the included blade scabbard.
