A lawn mower is built to give a neat finish on grass that’s cut regularly, and usually collects the clippings in a box. A grass cutter like the UM 616 is built for the grass a lawn mower can’t cope with: long, thick, rough growth in fields, paddocks, orchards and verges. It throws the clippings out to the side instead of collecting them, and the aim is to get the area back under control rather than to leave stripes. No. The UM 616 EBE is side discharge only, with no grass box and no mulching mode. That’s deliberate: long, heavy grass would fill a collector in seconds, and there’s far too much of it for a mulching deck to chop finely. The clippings are thrown out to the side, so on a big area you can leave them to break down or rake them up, depending on the finish you need.

It’s designed for long grass that would stall or clog an ordinary mower, which is why it’s so popular for paddocks, orchards and areas that only get cut a few times a year. For very long or heavy growth, set the deck high for a first pass and lower it for a second, and slow the drive down so the deck has time to clear the grass. Woody growth such as brambles and saplings is a job for a brushcutter rather than a grass cutter.

The hydrostatic drive provides smooth, stepless speed control without the need to shift gears. This allows the operator to precisely match the mower’s forward speed to the terrain and grass conditions, from 0.4 to 1.0 metres per second, ensuring an optimal cut and maximum control.

As with any walk-behind mower, work across the face of a slope rather than up and down it, take extra care on wet grass, and follow the guidance in Honda’s owner’s manual on steeper banks.

It does the same job: cutting long grass that an ordinary mower can’t handle. The difference is how it does it. An Allen Scythe cuts with a reciprocating cutter bar at the front, a bit like a hedge trimmer laid flat, while the UM 616 uses a rotary blade under a floating deck, with a modern Honda four-stroke engine and hydrostatic drive. If you’re replacing an old Allen Scythe, it’s well worth talking it through with us first, as the right machine depends on what you’re cutting.

Fresh unleaded petrol, following the guidance in Honda’s owner’s manual. Grass cutters often stand for weeks between jobs, and standard E10 petrol can go stale in that time and cause starting problems. E5 super unleaded keeps better, an alkylate fuel such as Aspen 4 keeps far longer still, and a fuel stabiliser helps whichever you use. Ask us about fuels and stabilisers when you collect your machine.

An annual service keeps it reliable: an oil change (the GXV160 takes 0.65 litres), cleaning or replacing the air filter, a new spark plug, and sharpening and balancing the blade. Grass cutters work in tough conditions, so clean the underside of the deck after use and check the blade over if you’ve hit anything solid.
