The STIHL GTA 40 is the company’s first battery-powered pruner specifically engineered for professional applications. It is an essential tool for those involved in tree and shrub care, horticulture, landscaping, and even for processing wood on construction sites. This pruner is adept at tasks ranging from ground-level pruning to complex crown reduction work in tree canopies.
Please note: This is the tool-only version. It requires two STIHL AS 2 batteries and a charger, which are sold separately. A kit version including batteries and a charger is also available.
At the heart of the GTA 40 is a powerful, low-maintenance EC engine, which, paired with the 1/4″ PM3 saw chain, delivers exceptionally clean and precise cuts. The variable chain speed gives the operator full control over the cutting performance, adapting to different types of wood and tasks. The intelligent electronics ensure CONSTANT POWER, meaning performance does not decrease as the batteries discharge. Automatic chain lubrication keeps the 6″ bar and chain running smoothly, supplied from a tool-free oil tank with enough capacity for extensive use.
Designed for two-handed use, the GTA 40 features a soft, rubberised handle and upper grip to prevent slipping and ensure a secure hold. A claw-shaped deflector separates the grip area from the cutting attachment for added safety. The design is suitable for both right and left-handed users thanks to a rocker switch on both sides. For easy access when working at height or on the ground, an attachment ring allows the tool to be hooked onto a belt. A compatible GTA 40 holster is also available separately. Chain adjustments are simplified with side-mounted chain tensioning, and the captive nuts on the sprocket cover prevent loss during maintenance.
The GTA 40 operates on two STIHL AS 2 lithium-ion batteries, which are discharged in parallel to provide sustained power. The tool cannot be operated with only one battery. An easy-to-read LED indicator on top of the tool displays the remaining charge level, allowing for efficient work planning. When using two AS 2 batteries, operators can achieve up to 240 cuts on 5cm branches. Furthermore, the GTA 40 and its AS 2 batteries are certified with an IPX4 rating, making them splashproof and reliable for use in adverse weather conditions.
*Please be aware that while the GTA 40 can be used by all users on the ground, it is only certified for aerial use by trained arborists.
